RELIEVERS: Closer-worthy skill sets among non-closers through July

Deadline deals did not really include much with closers. Those deals got done earlier. Therefore, we shift gears and look at the Closer Caliber Skills charts (AL version) (NL version) that you can find in the Stats and Tools section under the tab Bullpen Indicators. This chart uses filters to create a list of relievers who are demonstrating strong skills: DOM greater than 5.6, CMD greater than 1.9, expected home run rate less than 1.1 and innings per game under three.

The list this season is huge. So we put the filters on performance enhancers. We filtered again using:

  • Dom at or above 8.0
  • Cmd at or above 2.5
  • Expected home runs at or under 1.0
  • Saves under five
  • Flyball rate under 40 percent
