This is a very simple, basic column. Take the relievers who are projected for at least two holds or a save. From that subset, take the relievers who have an actual ERA to-date under 3.50, a xERA to-date under 3.50, a projected ERA (pERA) under 3.50, and a projected xERA (pxERA) under 3.50. You end up with just seven closers, one job-share closer, and seven non-closers. You want the best shot at preserving ERA and WHIP with relievers at the end of the season, these are the guys who give you the best shot at that.
Let's start with the closers who meet these simple criteria:
| closers | IP | ERA | WHP | xERA | pSV | pIP | pERA | pWHP | pxERA |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Duran, Jhoan PHI | 45.1 | 1.79 | 1.04 | 1.97 | 8 | 13 | 2.08 | 1.08 | 2.11 |
| Miller, Mason SD | 52.1 | 0.86 | 0.82 | 1.87 | 7 | 13 | 2.08 | 0.92 | 2.01 |
| Smith, Cade CLE | 56.0 | 2.25 | 1.09 | 2.98 | 7 | 13 |
