One of the oldest beefs in the history of philosophy is that between rationalists and empiricists. Is knowledge derived from reason, logic, and perhaps some innate connection to an ultimate truth? Or do we come about all knowing by observation and experience? This ancient rivalry makes Yankees/Red Sox look more like White Sox/Marlins.

An aspect of this schism is found in baseball talent evaluation: quants vs. scouts. Should advanced metrics and models hold sway, or must we have actual eyes on a player and the training to assess his talents as they unfold in the tangible realm?
