The Rockies have gotten off to a predictably poor start to the 2021 season, though their route there may be more of a surprise. Through Friday, the team’s starting rotation had maintained a solid 3.43 ERA, seventh best in the league. The success may be short-lived, as they have maintained just a 7.7 K-BB%—the worst mark in the league. Even so, it is still worth digging into why some of that success has occurred.

In 2020, the Rockies' rotation collectively threw their slider at a 21.9% clip, the fifth-highest rate in the league. So far this season, that number has skyrocketed to 28.9%, and it has led to early success for individual members of the rotation. While that could be early season variance, the widespread change...
