This is due to a number of factors, including the team’s large financial commitment to Votto and his stature within the organization. However, his presence in the lineup cannot cover over concerning trends in his skill profile.

While his power production had come and gone across the past few seasons, Votto’s on-base average had never faltered. However, that changed last season, as he failed to reach base at a .400 clip for the first time since 2008.
