The loss of top pitching prospect Michael Kopech to Tommy John surgery dealt a major blow to the White Sox ongoing rebuilding plans for 2019. The team will still have a pair of promising young rotation arms in Lucas Giolito (RHP, CHW) and Reynaldo López (RHP, CHW), and while both have shown flashes of upside in 2018—Giolito posted a 3.86 ERA, 9.6 Dom, 3.3 Cmd, 3.24 xERA, and 129 BPV over six starts in August, and Lopez has a 2.60 ERA, 10.4 Dom, 4.0 Cmd, 3.68 xERA, and 122 BPV over his last six starts—their overall numbers (Giolito: 5.29 xERA, 16 BPV; Lopez: 5.06 xERA, 41 BPV) indicate they still have a lot of work to do.
