Not so in Philadelphia, where the firing of now ex-manager Rob Thomson was surprising, not so much in light of the team’s results—at 9-19, they were tied with the Mets for worst in MLB—but for how early in the season it came. We’re talking a full week before the appearance of player bobblehead marketing tie-ins depicting them as Star Wars heroes or the wave of over-the-top, Tex-Mex-themed food stunts honoring that most American of Mexican holidays, Cinco de Mayo, featuring unhinged selections such as the 26-inch “Broomstick Burrito” and the ominously named “Machete,” a two-foot carne...
