DIVISIONAL OUTLOOK: AL East—Carp joins Red Sox

Buried under a pile of holdovers, trade and free-agent acquisitions in Seattle, Mike Carp (1B/OF, BOS) may have seen his playing-time prospects brighten considerably with his trade to the Red Sox, a team in need of a LHB who can play the corner OF spots and 1B. Carp will battle the switch-hitting Daniel Nava (OF, BOS) and Lyle Overbay (1B, BOS) for one or maybe two roster spots.

In Carp, the Red Sox get a player who has had a hard time staying on the field but who, if healthy, offers the most raw power of the bunch (142 PX, 12 HR in 290 ABs in 2011).
