NEWS: Boston Red Sox LHP James Paxton has been shut down for the season due to knee inflammation.

BHQ SPIN: By making 19 starts and pitching 96 innings, Paxton more than tripled the number of starts he had made and threw almost five times as many innings has he had in the 2020, 2021 and 2022 seasons combined. So, perhaps it is not entirely surprising that, after sitting at a 3.34 ERA through his first 16 starts, the wheels came off in his final three (9.2 IP, 16 ER, 18 H, 10 BB, 8 K). Manager Alex Cora attributed it to Paxton’s mechanics being off and losing his breaking ball, rather than fatigue or the physical issue.
