Matsuzaka returns to BOS rotation, Byrd designated for assignment

Marlon Byrd (OF, BOS) was designated for assignment to open a roster spot for Daisuke Matsuzaka (RHP, BOS), who made his first start in more than a year on June 9 against WAS. Byrd was acquired in late April to shore up an injury-depleted outfield, but is the odd man out with the rise of Daniel Nava (LF, BOS), the addition of Scott Podsednik (OF, BOS), and Adrián González (1B/OF, BOS) playing some in RF this season. Over the last two weeks, Byrd saw only 9 AB, and struggled greatly with xBA of .228, 3% bb%, and 24 PX; all well below career norms for the 34-year-old.
