Long in rebuilding mode, the Cubs decided on August 5 to take a look at two players who may have a major role in the team's future: center fielder Brett Jackson (OF, CHC) and third baseman Josh Vitters (3B, CHC). Each is covered in-depth write-ups in our Daily Call-Ups column, and each is expected to receive significant playing time over the balance of the season.

Vitters was not immediately inserted in the lineup Sunday but should supplant Luis Valbuena (3B, CHC) in short order, as Valbuena has shown little warranting the extensive playing time he has seen since Ian Stewart (3B, CHC) was felled by injury.
