“Let me show you how these work,” I would call out, as one after another disinterested customer walked by my kiosk, in a popular mall on the outskirts of Chicago. Nope. Not interested. Crickets. Most just ignored me, while a few shielded their eyes, speeding up their pace only to slow back down once they were out of my earshot. “Blo-Pens,” I’d say, desperation on my breath. “Great for ages 6-10. The perfect gift for that niece or nephew. Let me show you? Ma’am?” But again, nothing. No response. I was a man on an island.
