Positional scarcity in 2025

Catcher, Shortstop, Second Base, Third Base, First Base, Outfield.

That's been our paradigm for positional scarcity for years. It's been the basis of our publishing hierarchy for the pre-season Market Pulse, and it's how many fantasy GMs view positions when drafting and setting their rosters. There's only one problem.

It's wrong.

MLB has seen its own paradigm shift over the past couple of decades, often choosing hitting over defense at what use to be defense-first positions. The light-hitting defensive wizard at shortstop, for example, feels quaint. In addition, players' overall athleticism has increased, allowing better hitters to move up the defensive spectrum. And the changes we're about to outline may also be the result of year-to-year...
