Second-half surgers, 2023

Our last column of the season with a 2023 focus takes a look at starting pitchers whose skills have surged since July 1.

Here are the 1H to 2H BPV changes of all starting pitchers, along with 1H-2H changes for other key skill components (min. 20 IP each half):

Let's take a closer look at some second-half surgers worth owning down the stretch and heading into 2024.
 

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Tanner Bibee (RHP, CLE) did not own good command building blocks in the first half of 2023 (9.5% SwK%, 58% FpK%, 38% Ball%). All of those marks have soared in the second half: 12.1% SwK%, 64% FpK%, 36% Ball%. Those measures support a higher BPV than the one he has shown since July (94 BPV).
