BATTERS: Isolating Sluggers

Today we are going to use ISO to help identify potential targets for those in leagues that use slugging percentage, those who use traditional categories and are in need of a power boost, and those who are simply looking for another way to evaluate power hitters. Our focus is on power sources whose fantasy value is depressed in traditional leagues due to less-than-stellar batting average, but who hold additional value in leagues that count slugging percentage as a category.

ISO is used to measure a player’s extra bases per AB to quantify raw power. To calculate ISO, you simply subtract a player’s batting average from his slugging percentage. Here is the YTD ISO leaderboard (through games of 7/12):

  • Minimum of 100 AB
  • Minimum of .200...
