The team’s starting second baseman, DJ LeMahieu (2B, COL), hit the DL earlier this week with a sprained thumb, marking the second time this season—the other being a hamstring issue—that the All-Star has been shelved in the season's first couple of months. LeMahieu hopes to begin swinging a bat within the next week, but an extended absence could force the team to consider other options as they try to overtake the Diamondbacks for the NL West lead.
The short-term answer has been Daniel Castro (SS, COL), a defense-oriented infielder who came up with the Braves organization, and who owns a career .210 BA (.233 xBA) in roughly 250 MLB at-bats dating back to 2015. He hit his first HR of the year Monday (May 14) in San Diego,...
