Opening Day results weren’t particularly positive for Madison Bumgarner (LHP, ARI) on the surface, as he allowed six earned runs across and 11 baserunners in four innings of work. On the other hand, he averaged 90.3 mph with his fastball, nearly two ticks above his average velocity in 2020. He also generated 14 total whiffs. In comparison, his highest mark in 2020 was 11; the only time he reached double-digits all season. It’s too early to declare Bumgarner “back,” and we’ll likely never see him return completely to form, but there might still be something left in the tank.
