Miami’s starting rotation generated a lot of buzz on the strength of some excellent showings in spring training. How have these young hurlers fared three weeks into the season, and is there anyone else in the pipeline?

So far, the results have been mixed. Caleb Smith (LHP, MIA) and Trevor Richards (RHP, MIA) are on the positive side of the ledger. Smith has been dominant, posting a 2.35 ERA, 0.87 WHIP, with 2.3 BB/9 and 11.3 K/9 in 23 IP, good for a 156 BPV. His is a clear case in which the underlying skills and the results agree. Although he only ranks in the 59th percentile in fastball velocity, he’s 91st percentile in fastball spin. Smith’s been successful throwing the FB up in the zone and pairing it with his excellent...
