Though the team’s major deadline acquisition, right-handed starter (for now) Michael Lorenzen, pitched a gem in his Phillies debut on Thursday, there are a few signs that paying attention to the back end of the bullpen is prudent as we enter the final two months of the season. 

Craig Kimbrel (RHP, PHI) has been a revelation, notching 18 saves through Friday, but his age (35) and workload (49 G; on pace for 70) hint that keeping him fresh needs to become a priority. That was on display August 2, as Gregory Soto (LHP, PHI) was called upon in a 9th inning save situation, even after Kimbrel had a day off. Soto allowed the tying run in a one-run game; Kimbrel then came on in the 10th, but also blew a save opportunity in...
