Pedro Álvarez (3B, PIT) had been seeing most of the starts at first base and swinging a hot bat, but he suffered a foot injury which led to a walking boot after the August 26 game. He was out of the lineup the following day, as expected, though it's unclear at this point if it will keep him out beyond that.

Ike Davis (1B, PIT) took advantage of Alvarez's absence, as he blasted a two-run homer off Adam Wainwright to help lead the Pirates to victory. That followed a pinch hit home run the previous night, and if Alvarez misses additional time, the team will get a chance to see if his mini power surge is a sign of things to come. It's doubtful, considering his .239/.354/.389  line, accompanied by slightly above average...
