Jason Hammel (RHP, CHC) has been fading down the stretch yet again. His last six starts have yielded two gems and four clunkers, which, all told, have resulted in a 7.20 ERA and eight homers allowed in 30 innings. The club has a $10 million option on him for 2017, or they could opt for a $2 million buyout. In case they choose to pass on bringing the 34-year-old back, another candidate has been busy staking his claim to the job.

Mike Montgomery (LHP, CHC) has been given an opportunity to start lately, and has more than held his own, recording a 3.33 ERA in five starts. Though he has a 4.4 Ctl and 21 percent hit rate during that time, and averaging fewer than five innings per start, he's shown some very positive signs. Most...
