Poor defense, along with a bit of a cold streak at the plate, have cost Pedro Álvarez (1B, PIT) some time at first base lately. Aramis Ramirez (3B, PIT) had been working out at first base for several weeks, and finally made his first career start there September 8 against the Reds. He was back there again the following day, and interestingly enough, the Pirates were facing a right-handed starter in both games.

Alvarez's 19 errors lead all major league first basemen by a wide margin, and tie him for the most errors at the position since 1999.
