Manager Joe Girardi has said that Aaron Hicks (OF, NYY) will continue to “play a lot” when Jacoby Ellsbury (OF, NYY) returns from a concussion.

Some have interpreted that as Ellsbury—who still has at least three seasons at more than $21 million per year remaining on his contract—will be relegated to serving as a fourth outfielder.

That’s a reasonable assumption, given that it is hard to fathom the team benching Hicks, who is providing first-rate defense while slashing .318/.426/.584 and setting a 27-HR, 19-SB pace.

Neither is Ellsbury likely to gain much time at the expense of early Rookie of the Year (if not MVP) favorite Aaron Judge (OF, NYY), whose major league-leading 19th home run June 10 set a new standard for...
