NL West: “Rushing” into stardom … but with a catch

Dalton Rushing has arrived, sort of. As we previously noted in this space, Rushing had been given little playing time behind the lineup combination of Will Smith at catcher and Shohei Ohtani at DH. When Smith was out of the lineup for a rest day, Rushing played. But Ohtani isn’t leaving the DH spot unless injured (or perhaps on pitching days, as was the case for Ohtani’s April 15th start against the Mets).

Recently, however, Rushing has found his way into the lineup much more frequently, and he has delivered as his prospect pedigree suggested he might: .414 BA, 7 HR, 10 R, 13 RBI, and a robust 485 PX supported by a 317 xPX. Impressive to say the least.

But there is some sleight of hand at work in this stat line:...
