In his influential 1971 book, Be Here Now, Harvard professor turned spiritual teacher Ram Dass discusses his travels to India and eventual return to the West to share his insights, “to work out karma or unfulfilled commitment.” This idea of karma differs from what we usually understand it to mean—that is, some kind of cosmic umpire meting out justice or rewards depending on your actions. What Ram Dass espouses is a notion of karma as unfinished business, a spiritual tie to that which is incomplete in our lives. Addressing unresolved commitments severs that bond and frees us from the cycle of repetition, bringing us closer to enlightenment as complete beings.
