President of baseball operations Alex Anthopoulos took some big swings at the trade deadline, coming up short on his home run hacks but connecting on a couple dribblers that could prove to be useful for the stretch run and beyond. As such, the team’s outlook was defined more by non-moves than by any single addition.
Both Tarik Skubal and Jacob deGrom were trade targets, either one of them a potentially devastating top-of-the-rotation partner for Chris Sale, especially in short postseason series. But the Braves couldn’t match the Dodgers’ prospect package for Skubal, and deGrom invoked his no-trade clause to block a move to Atlanta, apparently not out of any animus for the Braves (sorry, Mets fans) and but rather due...
