Two weeks ago in this space, we examined the Rays’ late-inning picture, noting that Griffin Jax was not a prominent part of the team’s closing mix despite being tabbed as the most likely candidate to close games by fantasy drafters. While Jax has remained outside of the closing mix since that writing, as Bryan Baker has continued to garner the bulk of save opportunities, a recent shift in Jax’s usage over the weekend suggests he could have another path to fantasy viability. 

In Tampa Bay’s game on April 26, Jax served as an opener, with Jesse Scholtens pitching in bulk behind him. Jax had a solid outing (2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 2 K, 1 BB) before giving way to Scholtens, and the outing stood out for a couple of reasons....
