Setup and context: Opening game of the series; Angels on four-game losing streak, while Rangers on four-game win streak; Rangers were tied for 2nd place in the division, though already 7 games back; Canning making his 5th career start and first against Texas; Smyly, returning from Tommy John surgery, had yet to go more than five innnings in a start; Smyly scuffled his way through six innings and wound up with the win (4-3) when the Angels' defense imploded in the 7th inning.
