Clarke Schmidt's (RHP, NYY) New Sweeper

Schmidt's sweeper is different in 2025. The sweeper is two mph slower, with more drop and sweep. Schmidt's sweeper added eight inches of downward movement while sweeping over four inches more toward his glove side. That turns the sweeper into an above-average pitch from a movement-profile standpoint.

Although Schmidt's sweeping slider hasn't generated tons of whiffs, with a 13.7% SwK, the contact quality has been solid. That's evident in his sweeper allowing a .195 wOBA (.218 xwOBA) against right-handed hitters in 2025, similar to 2024 (.226 wOBA, .232 xwOBA). However, we've seen Schmidt throw slightly fewer sweepers in 2025 (23.2%), down from 34.4% in 2024.
