MINORS: 2013 Draft: Scouting Round One

With the 2013 first year player draft under way, we take a look at each player taken in the first round, with a special eye to the surprises and which players have the quickest path to the majors.

This year’s draft was much less predictable than the 2012 draft and the surprises started right at the top.  Most analysts and mock drafters predicted that Oklahoma right-hander Jonathan Gray would go either #1 to the Astros or #2 to the Cubs. Gray is a tremendous talent with three plus offerings and a fastball that tops out at 100 mph, but the Astros went with Stanford’s Mark Appel who has roots in the Houston area and the Cubs opted to take 3B/OF Kris Bryant.  As a result, Gray fell to #3 and with the Rockies.
