The Cardinals placed Matt Carpenter on the disabled list and recalled the 27-year-old Hill from Triple-A. The right-handed hitter last appeared in the majors in ’10 when he hit a HR in 3 AB with St. Louis. Hill plays a variety of positions—catcher, 3B, 1B, LF, RF—but he isn’t known for his defense. Other than his arm strength, he lacks average tools at any of the positions. He isn’t adept at either receiving or blocking, his range is limited at the infield corners, and his speed and quickness isn’t suitable for the outfield. However, Hill can hit for power.
