With the end of the regular season almost here, it’s time for our annual look at pitching injuries that cost pitchers most or all of 2012. In a lot of cases, Tommy John surgery was the end result. While it appears that Tommy John surgeries were up noticeably this season, the numbers are not out of the ordinary when compared to other seasons.

That is a difficult time of the year to manage your roster because teams don't typically place players on the DL, and injury information become more difficult to find. This will be the last normal "injury transactions" week of the season. Then, it's a free for all!

It’s a bit early for my annual lessons learned from injuries and recoveries for the 2012 season as the disabling of Johan Santana triggered this column. The purpose of this column is two-fold. One it’s a review for me as an exercise in reviewing the way I evaluate player injuries. I try not to get stuck in a rut saying so-and-so will be out 36 days because that’s what my injury database says. Focus on the player, and then situation and medical information then use the database as a guide. Two, my hope it helps you garner more knowledge with selected injury situations.

While there aren't any real big names out this week, at this time of the year, the free agent pool is bone dry and no help can be found unless you make a deal.
