PT TODAY: Helsley injury pushes Gallegos to top of Cards' pen

NATIONAL LEAGUE  |  Jump to AL

Cardinals

NEWS:  RHP Ryan Helsley shut down with a forearm strain.

IMPACT:  Medium

BHQ SPIN:  Helsley (-1%, -10% SV) hits the 10-IL but could be out considerably longer as the club intends to “shut him down for several days.” His MRI came back negative, but the Cardinals will likely be cautious with their fireman. RHP Giovanny Gallegos (+10 SV%) seems the obvious choice to assume the closer role, and he’s been solid, if not spectacular, when called upon this season (26 IP, 8 SV, 3.51 ERA, 1.05 WHIP). RHP Jake Woodford (+1%) will join the active roster as a long relief option in the bullpen.
