PLAYING TIME: Thome traded to Orioles

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Thome traded to Orioles

Jim Thome (DH, BAL) is now an Oriole, his sixth team, after they acquired him from the Phillies for two Single-A players.  Baltimore’s appetite was obviously whetted by Thome’s earlier interleague performance at Camden Yards in which he had six hits in 14 AB and drove in four runs in three games, including his 605th lifetime HR.

The Orioles were surprise division leaders until falling under the weight of injuries to Nick Markakis (OF, BAL), Endy Chavez (OF, BAL), and most recently Nick Johnson (DH, BAL)—left-handed hitters all.  Even now, seven games over .500 and in 2ndplace in the AL East, the team is in the bottom third of the AL in runs, batting average, and on-base percentage.
