NEWS: Chicago recalled 1B Matt Mervis from AAA-Iowa and designated 1B Garrett Cooper for assignment.

BHQ SPIN: The Cubs swapped first basemen, cutting ties with Cooper and replacing him with Mervis, who was off to a strong start for AAA-Iowa (.288/.402/.606). Cooper was an initial beneficiary of the injury to Seiya Suzuki, receiving the majority of designated hitter at-bats against right-handed pitching due to Mike Tauchman getting more time in the outfield. It now appears that those designated hitter at-bats will go to Mervis, who is likely to be on the strong side of a platoon with Patrick Wisdom for the time being. Mervis should get some runway until Suzuki’s return, though it is possible...
