J.D. Martinez takes bat to New York

NATIONAL LEAGUE

New York Mets
NEWS: New York signed J.D. Martinez to a one-year, $12 million contract.
IMPACT: Medium
BHQ SPIN: Martinez has been a consistent offensive contributor and is coming off a 2023 season in which he hit 33 homers and had a 195 PX over 484 plate appearances. It’s not clear whether he will be ready for Opening Day, but once in the lineup, the expectation is that he’ll serve as the Mets’ every day DH. The biggest playing time loser is Mark Vientos, who had been expected to get the plurality of the plate appearances at DH. Now, at best, he will be settling for occasional at bats at third base and DH. Indeed, Vientos has options remaining so it would not be a shock if he wound up back at Triple-A Syracuse.
