AL East: Rice becoming a fixture in Yankees lineup

Leading up to August, Ben Rice had seen his playing time dwindle, largely as a function of Giancarlo Stanton returning from injury and getting the majority of designated hitter at-bats. From July 1 to July 28, Rice, who has been a strong performer against right-handed pitching this season (.248/.352/.468 in 290 PA), started just 11 of the team’s 22 games against right-handed starters, splitting time between first base, designated hitter, and catcher.

Starting at first base in place of Paul Goldschmidt, combined with an uptick in starts at catcher, has led to Rice seeing a significant increase in playing time. From July 29 to August 11, Rice started 11 of New York’s 13 games, with five starts at first base, five starts...
