RESEARCH: Does it matter where runners are stranded?

The concept of strand rate (S%), or the amount of baserunners a pitcher allows that don’t score, was first devised at by Ron Shandler many years ago. FanGraphs uses a slightly different statistic (LOB%, originally developed at The Hardball Times), but no matter how you calculate it, leaving runners on base is more luck than skill: players that significantly deviate from the league average in S% or LOB% should expect to see their numbers more towards the league average in the future.
