[FREE] As spring training gets into full swing, one area of major focus for most of us is getting a handle on how roles and playing time are going to shake out. It's is a fun and challenging exercise to see how all the pieces are going to fit... veterans, rookies, prospects, non-roster invites... nearly 2,000 players, all trying to find a spot on a 25-man roster on one of 30 teams.

It bears repeating... Last year's performances tend to grossly inflate our expectations for this coming year. And it is doing us a huge disservice.

In recent forum threads, I've been seeing the return of an old obsession. This is something we successfully discounted and dismissed over 10 years ago, but I suppose, with the re-emergence of the pitcher, it has reared its ugly head again.

Despite all the advanced forecasting models out there, we do a pretty crappy job of projecting player stats. Rather than continuing to bang our heads against walls in quest of a level of precision we can never achieve, the Mayberry Method is designed to simplify our efforts. Mayberry embraces imprecision and invites the wide error bars into the planning process.

Research has shown that the marketplace will significantly overvalue the impact of one season's performance when assessing talent for the subsequent season. It's time to take advantage at the draft table.

As much as this fantasy game is elegantly constructed, there are still elements of it that are agonizingly flawed.

It seems that Shandler is having an odd obsession with Draft & Hold leagues. I have been so involved in advanced fanalytic analysis for so long that people are surprised that I would be writing about a league format that is seemingly ... well, stupid. Draft a team and then watch it for six months? Where is the fun in that?
