BALTIMORE ORIOLES Organizational Report
Hitting (F)
Pitching (C-)
Top-end talent (F)
Overall (D-)
1. Erik Bedard LHP - 24 - 1999 (6) Norwalk CC
| TEAM (LG) | W-L | ERA | IP | CMD | K/9 | oppBA |
| Bowie (EL) | 6-3 | 1.97 | 68.2 | 2.1 | 8.7 | 0.173 |
| Baltimore (AL) | 0-0 | 13.50 | 0.2 | - | 13.5 | 0.500 |
| MLE | 6-3 | 2.38 | 68.2 | 1.7 | 7.1 | 0.197 |
Strengths: Command of 89-92 MPH fastball, 80 MPH curveball, and 79
MPH change-up. Setting up pitches
Weaknesses: Movement of fastball. Stamina
Comments: He was on the verge of making the Orioles' rotation after
dominating Double-A, but ended up having ligament transplant surgery on his
ulnar collateral ligament. It took nearly two months to decide upon the
surgery date, so he'll likely miss most, if not all, of the 2003 season. His
ability to throw three pitches for strikes and out-think the hitter will
eventually pay dividends.
2. Luis Jimenez OF/1B.....L/L.....20.....2001 FA (Venezuela)
| TEAM (LG) | AB | AVG | OBP | SLG | HR | SB | EYE |
| Bluefield (APPY)) | 176 | 0.375 | 0.474 | 0.597 | 8 | 9 | 1.00 |
Strengths: Bat speed, with power to all fields. Contact ability.
Plate discipline. Agility and size (6'4"/205#)
Weaknesses: Arm strength. Speed
Comments: Granted, he was only playing short-season baseball, but
displaying that kind of power, along with the ability to make contact and
draw walks, is extremely intriguing. He has enough defensive tools to handle
a corner outfield spot, although he'll likely lose what speed he has as he
gets older. It wouldn't be a stretch to see him make it to the high Class-A
level in 2003.
3. Rommie Lewis LHP.....20.....2001 (4) high school (WA)
| TEAM (LG) | SV | ERA | IP | CMD | K/9 | oppBA |
| Delmarva (SAL) | 25 | 2.15 | 71.0 | 3.9 | 9.8 | 0.190 |
Strengths: Command and movement of 89-93 MPH fastball and curveball.
Arm action. Projectable body
Weaknesses: Deception and utilization of change-up. Repeating
delivery. Stamina
Comments: He drew plenty of notice for pitching 27.2 consecutive
innings of shutout baseball. His 6'6" height gives him a good, downward
plane to his fastball and curveball, and may be able to pick-up his velocity
with better mechanics and physical maturation. Though he was highly
successful as a closer, the Orioles fully intend on using him as a starter
and will do so in the Frederick (CAR) rotation.
4. Daniel Cabrera RHP.....21.....1999 FA (DR)
| TEAM (LG) | W-L | ERA | IP | CMD | K/9 | oppBA |
| Bluefield (APPY) | 5-2 | 3.28 | 60.1 | 2.8 | 10.3 | 0.223 |
Strengths: Command and movement of 91-97 MPH fastball and slider.
Competitive. Keeps ball down. Height (6'7")
Weaknesses: Tightness of slider. Deception of change-up. Maturity and
experience
Comments: An imposing figure on the mound for his size and velocity,
his fastball picked up a few ticks over the off-season and didn't yield a HR
all season. He loves to attack hitters, but his aggressiveness can sometimes
lead to his downfall. Experience should cure most of his ills and should be
able to pitch in a full-season league in 2003.
5. John Maine RHP.....21.....2002 (6) UNC Charlotte
| TEAM (LG) | W-L | ERA | IP | CMD | K/9 | oppBA |
| Aberdeen (NY-P) | 1-1 | 1.74 | 10.1 | 7.0 | 18.3 | 0.162 |
| Delmarva (SAL) | 1-1 | 1.36 | 33.0 | 9.8 | 10.6 | 0.175 |
Strengths: Command and movement of 89-93 MPH two-seam fastball and
slurve-type slider. Smooth, ¾ delivery. Aggressive. Poise
Weaknesses: Utilization and deception of circle-change. Repeating
delivery. Need experience
Comments: He only tossed 43.1 innings, but if there were better base
skills than these, you'd be hard-pressed to find them. He has college
experience and a live arm, but is raw in his approach and his mechanics need
refined. 2003 will be a pivotal season as he will be asked to throw the
innings of a starter. If his stamina falters, look for him to move to the
bullpen.
